The Promise ❤️
Sitting by the windowpane she was reading her favourite book sipping hot coffee. He entered the room, smiled at her, and asked, “shall we go out?”. She placed the book marker and jumped out of the bed. It was the new year eve, the cafes, shops, restaurants, pubs all hung the offer banners, decorated with lights and flowers. The two walked in the beautiful street with their hands clasped, got into the pub, and sat at the terrace under the jewelled sky sipping bear. They spoke about their yesteryears, their lives now and their future, slowly they were getting high. They started speaking about having babies or not. He said, “it’s okay to have babies or not to have, both are fine”. She said, “Sometimes I love them, but sometimes I feel its okay not to have one!”. They walked back home sat at their warm place, spoke for hours and they did not realize when they slept.
The days passed it was then she was surprised
by her missed period. She bought a pair of pink rubber bands, pair of dainty
blue socks, wrote a small letter to him and placed it on his worktable. Sipping
hot coffee, she just sat right opposite to him to capture the very expression
that appears on his face. He looked at her and wondered of her weird
behaviours, he had least expectation about this. He opened the letter and a
bright smile on his face, yet he controlled all his excitement. He did not jump
out of his chair but congratulated her with a same bright smile.
Every passing month she scared more of losing the baby, she
always feared if something bad happened, but he always told her that nothing
goes wrong. It was at the 7th month; he took her to a beautiful
place blindfolded so she could not make out on which part of earth it was.
Their suite had a wonderful view of the mountains and a waterfall. It was rainy
season and through the window the sight of downpour seemed like the heaven came
down.
He had bought a dark
green saree, strings and strings of jasmine, glass bangles, jewels. Dressed her
up, fed her the favourite sweets, clicked some pictures, and then made her
piping hot frothy coffee. The best part then came when he read the favourite
lines from the book that she loved reading every rainy season. It was her dream
which she had never told him, never told anyone but had treasured deep within.
Her heart was filled with so much of joy! It was the dream come true!!! Looking through the window the sight of the downpour, fuming coffee, his sparkling
eyes she was tranced by all these. Her eyes were filled with the tears of
gratitude, she could not thank him enough for this. That day it was not just
two who were happy but their baby too.
The happiness was doubled when he took her to her parents
which she least expected who awaited her with all the things she loved. Her
room was filled with gifts, her books, favourite blankets, dolls that she once
played. It rained cats and dogs at her parent’s place, the breeze, the thunder,
schools declared monsoon holidays and people did not even stepped out. Her
father had walked miles in that rain to get her favourite food from the café
that she enjoyed as a little girl. That night after having the sumptuous dinner
with heartfelt laughter followed by long conversation, she buried herself
inside her fat blanket happily along with him. The room was filled with the
scent of wood. The next morning was promising as they drove back home.
That night though two were high, he made it a point to know
what had brought the charm on her face. He had opened the book where she had
placed the bookmark. He read the pages and looked at her, she was asleep. He had promised her that one day he would make her little dream come true as he kissed her forehead. He made it!
