Siddarth was extremely happy as he had chalked out the perfect plan for Amrutha’s higher studies. The newlyweds had promised each other of their plans for the year. She had the great desire to do her higher studies along with her present job whereas he had started to improve his technical skills for the better opportunities. Together they started dreaming of the better life, the places around the world they had to travel, their dream house and many more things. There was a message for him when he came out of the meeting that evening. Immediately he rushed home she was looking dog tired. He made some hot coffee and sat beside her. That day she had to spend long hours in the lab than usual which had drained her. After having her food she looked better. He assured a good night sleep would help her. The morning was promising she looked fine.   That evening when he returned from the office she was on the couch with her bag beside, it looked although she had collapsed out of tiredn...

Every evening after the office by 6:30 I, Krishna, development officer Esse life insurance, Rajpatna branch visited Shankar Bhat’s home. Shankar Bhat was the clerical staff at Esse life insurance. Shankar bhat was popularly known as Bhatru at Rajpatna. He is been working as the clerical staff in the same branch since 15 years. People admired his selfless service, the smile he carried most importantly his positive vibes. Every evening by the time I reached Bhat’s home, he tells his wife Annapoorna to serve me a cup of coffee and leaves to the sanctum beside their home for the holy rituals. It’s his way of thanking Mother Nature. Sometimes even the local people come there to offer their gratitude. Annapoorna Amma serves me the coffee with utmost love and leaves to the prayer room inside their home I sit there alone with my cup of hot filter coffee in the portico where there are some scented plants filling the atmosphere with pleasant fragrance. The day where my presence made no difference to this day where my absence mattered!

Image
The cold made me to pull up the blanket back. I crawled inside the warm blanket. After sometime when the morning bell rang I tried hard to open my lazy eyes and checked my phone. There was a text blinking “Check online”. The moment I switched on the data, the messages flooded into my phone. The employees had called for the national strike thus the college remained closed that Saturday. I rubbed my eyes, stretched my arms and looked at the big clock presented by my best friends which said it was 5:35. I stepped down the floor and realized how cold it was. I switched on the geyser meanwhile made some hot water for the fresh decoction. Splashing hot water on the face was the real feast. I sat there in front of the little fireplace in a warm chair with a mug of fuming hot frothy coffee. I looked at the clock again.   It was 6:05. I felt sipping hot coffee, recollecting the memories is the best part on this gloomy day of the winter. It was the last Saturday I would spend here in ...

The big vintage clock showed 11:45 when her phone rang that morning. Aabha wondered why Sakshi was calling her. She picked the call, even before she answered hello Sakshi started the conversation. She said “You know what happened?! I had typed what I’m undergoing because of Shankar in the notepad. I had copied it meanwhile Shankar called me. After the call by mistake I sent it to him which I realised a few minutes ago. Aabha asked Sakshi if she had got any reply even though she knew the answer was NO. Aabha consoled Sakshi in her usual way. The cab dropped her at the door step, she walked towards the door with fear filled stomach. She took out the door key as she used to reach home before Shankar. Her stomach had an unusual feeling because of fear, the open door added to it. She did not want to show her face to Shankar as she was too scared. She simply went inside the room even though she knew Shankar was in the kitchen. By the time she came out of the room Shankar had placed mugs ...

Emboldened by the lit lamp

Image
I woke up even before the morning bell called me, followed by a quick shower after which I lit the lamp and prayed for a promising day. I reported to the kitchen by 5:30 sharp, kept a cup of rice to cook in the pressure cooker, fried onion, ginger and tomato allowed it to cool. The kitchen started to fill with aroma of flavours. The cooled mixture went to the mixer jar along with some soaked cashew nuts and I started to grind them imagining the silky gravy. Suddenly the cooker exploded, with fear I jumped out. The gravy splashed all over the kitchen wall which was cleaned by me the previous day. The cooker lid struck the coffee filter making it to spill completely on the clean floor -Dystopia! I walked towards the bus stop with a sad face and boarded the bus after ten minutes. The honking vehicles, dust, hungry stomach, disgusting traffic, anxiety everything added to what had happened in the morning. I stepped inside...

On that day when he came home in the evening the door was locked. The very thought that popped in his mind was that she being the housewife why she had to go out at this time when she gets ample time in the day. He saw his neighbour who had come out, even before he asked anything the neighbour told him that his wife was hurt by the rusted iron string while painting the gate so she went to hospital a few minutes ago. He turned and observed the gate which was painted with colors. The rusted gate had turned into the beautiful entrance. He opened the door with the key that he had, went inside and sat on the sofa simply looking around him. The walls filled with colorful paintings, the pictures of them framed brilliantly. The colorful mats made with waste cloth, each door having colorful hangings made with used coconut shells. He went to the kitchen even the kitchen slab had a colorful dainty tray filled with colorful flowers. The thoughts of their yesteryears started rushing wi...
